In 1881 Scientific American noted a fall that October of enormous "spider webs" coming from over Lake Michigan and raining down on cities and towns in eastern Wisconsin.

The webs, "strong in texture and very white," were anywhere from 60 feet in length to "mere specks." The magazine thought it was curious that no one reported the "presence of spiders in this general shower of webs."
